With over 2,000,000 adults in the prison system today, only 7% of them are female. Which is approximately 213,700 women in prison. However, these woman have prison life much better than men. While men worry about rival gangs and being killed, women have their families to lean on. In these prisons, they create families and roles based on who is the most masculine. The leader's job is to make sure that everyone stays out of trouble and does what they are told. Something that really helps the female prisoners is all of the programs to help them. For example, if an inmate is pregnant and has only a few months left of their sentence for a non-severe crime, then they can take care of their baby in the prisons nursery. The prison provides diapers, cribs, clothes, and anything necessary for taking care of a baby. The prison also has classes for women to talk about their feelings and their lives outside of prison. With about only about 40% of women having a full time job at time of arrest, they learn how to keep a job and what maintaining one consists of. This allows the women to build trust in each other and in their own way, a community.
